What I expected: Typical shoujo historical romance manga/anime, female protagonist thinks about nothing else but romance, reverse harem, nothing really special
What I got: Strong badass female protagonist, lots of character development, males actually respect females, romance is more of a sub-plot, cool fighting scenes

Yes! The anime adaption is supposed to be starting in Spring 2015 ^^
Actually, Hori-san to Miyamura-kun (the comic strip, not the manga Horimiya) has an animation, but the episodes are OVA. It would be nice if it the manga version had an adaption though, because I prefer that style of illustration and flow of the plot. And I completely agree with you on the other series mentioned above! Those some of my favorite shoujo series.
